Submitted by Chris Haggett - Penketh Chess ClubArising from a discussion in our monthly club newsletter, we have an item that we feel may be of interest to other clubs - via the WDCL web-site perhaps? We know that Penketh is the oldest club in the League. (Founded in 1889 as Warrington Chess Club and name changed in the 1980's to "Penketh incorporating Warrington CC") But do we have the oldest members - in terms of playing experience - as well? We have discovered that no less than FOUR of our regular players made their senior chess league debuts over 50 years ago. (see details below). Can any club beat that? We also have someone who has been playing in the Warrington League for 48 years. Again, can anyone beat that? (I'm aware that this will undoubtedly attract the comment" "Well, if they've been playing that long, why aren't they better than they are?" The answer is of course that we peaked long, long ago!) Chris SENIOR CHESS LEAGUE DEBUTS - Colin Mackinnon - Jan 1954 - playing for Oxford University in the Oxford League
- Arthur Kirkman - Feb 1954 - playing for Newcombe in the Liverpool League
- Griff Parsonage - Oct 1959 - playing for Waterloo in the Liverpool League
- Chris Haggett - Jan 1962- playing for NALGO in the Bristol League
WARRINGTON LEAGUE DEBUT - Griff Parsonage - 20th Oct 1964 - playing for Warrington (v Chester)
